January 13th, 2012:

Please use extreme caution on the lake this weekend. There are varying layers of
ice out there from open water to 6" is places. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THIS LAKE make sure you go out with someone who does.

We are not recommending the use of motorized vehicles on the lake proper - due to the extra weight.

Water Temperature is 77 degrees at the surface

Water level is up about a foot and starting to receed. The water never came up high enough to cover the beaches. This is the most optimum water level perfect for beaches and beach acess. All our favorite spots - mosquito bay, sand island, stump island, and the trap islands have beach and are still negotiable!

Fishing:
Walleye have slowed down a bit
Rainbows are up
Bass are running big!

Tip of the Week:
If you don't like the Canadian Gees on your bech - don't worry, Goose season opens soon! Have you hugged a hunter today?

Water Temperature is 74 degrees, so it is a refreshing swim!

Water Level is still high for this time of year. The water was down about 2', but is now up a foot due to the rain. The Trap islands are still under water, Stump ally is negotiable, the sand bar is not out at Northampton yet. Scout Island has some beach on the Southwest side and there is some beach at Sand Island. So the good news is boating is a pleasure, bad news is that there are not allot of places to park!

Fishing:
Trout are biting
Walleye is Good
Perch are biting
Northerns have slowed down a bit

Tip of the week: Make sure all your passengers are on board before heading out! We saw a swimmer stranded after his ride decided to leave - unaware that he was still in the water this past week!!

Water Level:

The lake has come down about 3' and continues to drop about 4" per day. It is currently at its normal level for Memorial Day Weekend. The larger islands have some beach and some spots to park, but the trap islands and the smaller islands remain under water.

Water Temperature:

72 degrees on the surface, 65 degrees about 5 feet down

So it is swimmable

Fishing:

The fishing has REALLY turned on in the last 2 weeks. Walleye are biting, Bass are moving off their spawning beds - so it should be a good opening weekend for them. Perch are biting as well.

The shallow water seems to be the hot spot right now - 15' or less. The GSLFF bass fishing tournament this saturday at Sport Island Pub proves to be a good season opener. Registration from 7am-9am.

Tip of the Week:

Make sure to check you bilge pump and batteries befor heading out on the water - so you don't sink!!!!

Water Level:

is still 1' over the spillway, but is dropping about 6"per day. Most of the launches will be able to be acessed later in the week, but the state launches may still have trouble with the docks. Proper road still has about 4" of water on it, but is now acessable with care.

Good news
is that if you get your boat out there you can go anywhere you want!

Bad news
is that there is quite a bit of debris floating around out there - be careful of floating logs, barrels, docks row boats etc.

Fishing:

Northerns are biting and quite a few nice ones were caught at lat weekend's fishing tournament.
Walleys are small and we suspect that quite a few are still in the creeks.

Be careful out there!!!

Make sure to come up and check on your docks!

Ice Report: The Lake is beginning to thaw! There is still about 12" of ice out there, but the water is up 6'. There is a lot of water on the shorelines and up to 20' of open water in spots.

We do NOT recommend ANYONE ride the lake at this point.

Recreation: The warmer weather predicred this week leads us to believe the ice will come off in the next 7 days. Our predicion is Thursday. The ice is grey, but will be clear shortly. The water is coming up in the bays and the Trap islands are still showing some shoreline.

Fishing:

Walleye: closed

Northerns: closed

Brown trout - are biting well in the streams

Perch: NA

Tip of the Week: Pay close attention to your docks this week, the water is rising steadily in the bays.

Looks like we will be boating before you know it!

Please be advised that while the contractor continues to break up ice on the Lake in the construction area, there will no longer be either barrels or snow fencing in place on the lake surface, as conditions have rendered it impossible to safely place this guidance on the remaining thin ice/slush near the bridge.

UPDATE FROM NYSDOT - Open Water Notice for Great Sacandaga Lake in the area of the Batchellerville Bridge

The New York State Department of Transportation advises that due to construction of the new Batchellerville Bridge open water will be present along the entire width of Sacandaga Lake. Existing ice will be broken so that equipment can be moved between shores. The open water conditions will exist for the duration of the winter season.

To maximize safety, orange construction barrels and reflective tape will be placed from shore to shore along the open water.

Lake users should comply with posted signage and respect all barricades, fencing and other tools defining active work

areas. Snowmobilers and all-terrain vehicle operators should reduce speeds and use caution near the bridge.

Please bear in mind that weather conditions may limit the visibility of the signage, barrels and other guidance in place

on equipment and on the ice. Avoid abrupt maneuvers near the bridge, as other vehicles may be approaching the area.

Ice Report: 18"-20"

Recreation: The thaw made ice with patches of snow! Snowmobiling is good, and you can now get your 4-Wheelers out!!!

Fishing:

Walleye: fair-slow
Northerns: biting well - 40" range
Brown trout - starting to bite
Perch: Biting

Tip of the Week:
Be sure to hook your sounders well - or you might lose them!
Be sure to check your shantys - jack them up and chip them out!!

ICE REPORT:

We 11" of solid Black Ice

Due to the recent storms there is about 6" of slush on top of the ice

WATER LEVEL:

is down about 8' from New Years

RECREATION:

Snowmobiles are good to go anywhere - ATV's stay in the trails and out of the slush, the trails are beaten down and hard as a rock.

BE CAREFUL if you come across other paths as they may throw you

FISHING:

Fishing is good, but a bit down due to the January Doldrums

TIP OF THE WEEK:

ICE FISHERMEN - Check Your Shanty's due to the slush they may not be jacked up like you think they are!!! Many fisherman spent quality time digging their shanty's out last weekend.

Water Temperature is 45 Degrees

Fishing: fair

Boating/Recreation: The Water levels are still quite high for this time of year, but if you can stand the cold there is still wxcellent boating out there!

Foliage: We are past peak and quite a few leaves are down, but there is still some color to be seen on the mountains.

Hunting: There have been some nice entries in our Big Buck contest already!

Boating Tip of the Week: Check your docks if you have not already pulled them out!

Water Temperature is 60 degrees and dropping

Fishing :

Rainbows are biting
Walleye is fair to poor

Northerns are descent in the shallows - good size

Perch are doing well in the rocky shoals

Boating/Recreation:

Happy fourth of July, oh no I mean Columbus Day - you just can't tell from the waterlevels which are exactly where they were in July. All the rain has brough te water up 5 feet. So get out there this weekend and take advantage of the great weather and excellent Fall boating!!

Foliage Report:

This week should be peak! So if you have the opportunity get out there and view the vibrant show nature id putting on!

Boating Tip of the week:

Seriously folks - get your docks before someone else does!!!!

Water Temperature is 65 Degrees

Fishing: Fair

The Rainbows are Hitting nicely

Walleyes are Average

Some descent Northerns were caught at the GSLFF contest last week

Boating/ Recreation:

All this rain is causing the water level to rise rapidly, they are already up 2'.Water levels are about what they were early to mid August. By the time everything is said and done the water may be up 5'.The good news as that we will have Great boating for Columbus Day weekend!

Foliage Report:

The leaves are really beginning to turn vibrant colors now!

Peak should be this week and next week.

If you can get out to see them you really should!

Boating Tip of the Week:

With all this rain we are at flood stages right now. If you have moved your docks out because of the lower water levels typical for this time of year you need to get out there and re-adjust NOW!!!

Water Temperature is 71 Degrees (surface temp)

Fishing:
Rainbows are hot right now
Walleye has slowed down a bit
Bass are steady

Boating/Recreation
The Water is dropping about a foot a week now
DO NOT STRAY from the channel in Northville especially by Northampton Beach the rocks are out.
Stay out of stump ally.
The southern Trap Islands now have plenty of beach especially by Scout Island.

Foliage Report
The Trees are just beginning to turn now
Looks like a good year for pumpkins and the apples should be especially flavorful this year due to the dry summer. Check our farmers markets for some great produce!

Boating Tip of the Week
Don't forget to push your docks out - or you may have a boat beached in mud!!!
(Seriously folks there is probably only 3' of water under some of the boats up by Vandenburg point right now)

Fishing:
The storms of last week has caused the fishing to slow a bit
But it should be real hot soon now that the storms are over and the moon is changing phases.

Boating/Recreation
Water levels are up about 2'
The trap islands are now underwater
Stump Ally is now negotiable
Still plenty of beach at Sand Island

Water Temperature is 79 Degrees

Fishing:
The Rainbow are biting well.
Walleye are biting.
Carp are back in the shallows!

Boating/Recreation
The Trap Islands are still not completely out. Water is about 4' higher than normal for this time of year, but down 2' from mid july. If this keeps up the water will be great through labor day with few worries for your props.

Beaches are good with plenty of beach at Sand Island and the sand bar at the Northampton Campsite is ancle deep. Stump ally has about 5' of water when approaching from the Lanzis side.

Don't leave orange juice in your cooler without any ice!!!!

The Walleye and Norhterns are biting well!

Boating/Recreation
The Trap Islands are just starting to come out. There is a nice shoreline on Sand Island, Beacon Island and Scout Island. Stump ally is still negotiable. There is just about a foot of water covering the sand bar at Northampton, so it is comfortable to take a lawn chair out and sit on it.

Great Memorial Day Weekend!

Memorial Day weekend was perfect weather all weekend. The water was great for swimming and I even went in myself!

I had been told about Eagles on the GSL but saw the bald eagle for the first time this past weekend! What an amazing site and a huge nest!!

This weekend looks to be shaping up to be as nice as last weekend! Be sure to check the entertainment pages as there is great entertainment from acoustic to bands all around the Lake this weekend!!

Tuesday May 18th

Water Temperature is 58 Degrees

Fishing:
The Northerns are biting well
Trout have picked up
Perch and Bass are biting good (even though bass is currently closed)
Walleye are Coming slow
Carp are in!

Boating/Recreation
The water level is up about a foot, still about 2 feet lower than normal for this time of year, but this is actually perfect for boating and beaches. There are beaches on the islands. The trap islands are just covered. The water is high enough to boat without worrying too much.

The water is continuing to warm, and if this trend continues - we will be swimming by Memorial Day weekend!

Fishing:
The Northerns are biting good
Trout are a little slow
Perch and Bass are biting good ( even though bass is currently closed)
Walleye are Coming slow

The water level is about 3 feet lower than normal for this time of year, but this is actually perfect for boating and beaches. There is enough island and the trap islands are out a bit. The water is high enough to boat without worrying too much. If the level could stay at this level for the whole seson it would be perfect.

The water is warm for this time of year, and if this trend continues - we will be swimming by Memorial Day weekend!
